Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein wrote the script, which is based on a narrative by Terry Rossio, Michael Dougherty, and Zach Shields. Borenstein, Dougherty, and Shields collaborated on the novel King of the Monsters as well. Godzilla vs. Kong takes place five years after King of the Monsters and pits Godzilla and Kong against one another in the aftermath of Ghidorah's rampage.

There will be a sequel to the film.

In 2024, five years after Godzilla defeated and destroyed his alien foe Ghidorah in a battle for supremacy in 2019, he and Kong are the only active Titans on Earth. Skull Island's climate has become unstable as a result of a storm generated by Ghidorah combining with the storm cell that surrounds the island perpetually, forcing Monarch to confine Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that simulated the island's environment, with the assistance of an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia, who is deaf and communicates with Kong via sign language.

Following the attack, the public, impressed by Godzilla's abilities to defend humanity, turned against him. Madison Russell, an adult listener to Bernie's podcast, is terrified about the newest Godzilla attack on her school. When she tries to reason with her widowed father Mark (who also happens to be the Monarch's director) regarding the origins of Godzilla's rampage, he dismisses all she says, only stating that animals may change like people. Madison enlists the help of her best friend Josh Valentine to solve the secrets surrounding Apex and the guy responsible for Godzilla's rampage.

Apex founder and CEO Walter Simmons enlists the help of former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist Nathan Lind as they search for a powerful energy source for their company. When Nathan's brother tried to investigate the Hollow Earth, he was murdered by a tremendous anti-gravity field contained inside the tunnel. Apex has constructed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, which are modified ships that can endure the pressure of the gravitational field, according to Walter.

The three disembark and find themselves inside a vast black cavern, where they come face to face with Apex's ultimate weapon, "Mechagodzilla" a mechanical version of Godzilla piloted by the late Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son, Walter's top technological officer Ren Serizawa. Walter sends a gigantic adult Skullcrawler nicknamed "Number 10" into the chamber to test Mechagodzilla's strength against the Titans as soon as the mecha is turned on. The Skullcrawler is on the brink of assaulting Madison, Josh, and Bernie when it is caught and imprisoned by Mechagodzilla, who uses a tremendous red energy beam to cut the Skullcrawler in two, enabling Madison, Josh, and Bernie to take refuge in a tiny hatch. However, owing to power supply limits, the test is cut short when the mecha shuts down right after.

Walter intends to vanquish Mechagodzilla by channeling the powers of the Hollow Earth. Apex is assaulting Godzilla because he and the Titans are being replaced by humans. Ren is sitting inside the severed head of Ghidorah that Apex got from Alan Jonah five years ago, operating Mechagodzilla through radio waves.

Godzilla enters the city and, recognizing Kong's presence in the Hollow Earth, uses his atomic breath to bore a tunnel through the biosphere, causing the temple to collapse. While Kong and Nathan's team fight off a flock of Hellhawks, Maia and her team try to flee in their HEAV, only for Kong to grab it on their way out and, despite Maia's attempts to shoot him in order to flee, he instantly crushes the aircraft in his hand after peeking inside to make sure Jia, Ilene, and Nathan aren't in there, killing Maia and her crew.

Kong accepts Godzilla's challenge and, with his axe in hand, makes his way through the hole made by Godzilla's atomic breath to Hong Kong, followed by Ilene, Nathan, and Jia in their HEAV. Kong fights Godzilla again when he arrives in Hong Kong, this time gaining the upper hand over the Titan to the point where he shoves his axe down Godzilla's throat to prevent him from firing his atomic breath. Kong discovers that his axe can not only block but also absorb Godzilla's atomic breath and uses it to harm the Titan in the thigh, however Godzilla takes the axe and discards it. After dodging and evading Godzilla's attacks with the help of Hong Kong's buildings and superior agility, Kong retrieves his axe before unleashing an explosion that knocks both Titans back, leading Nathan to believe Kong has won the second round.

Kong and Godzilla both heal and get back on their feet, with Godzilla on the prowl for Kong, who has taken refuge atop a building to avoid the Titan's attention. When Kong throws a construction crane into a building, it distracts Godzilla to the point where he ambushes him from above and places the Titan in a chokehold with the intent of strangling him, only for Godzilla to break free and unleash his full fury on Kong, eventually dislocating his left arm, slashing Kong with his claws, and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong's attempts to force Godzilla off of him by punching his wounded thigh The vanquished Kong fiercely roars in defiance against Godzilla after being restrained and held down by the monstrous monster in a display of dominance.

Walter instructs Ren to send out Mechagodzilla to slay Godzilla back at the Apex headquarters. Despite Ren's warnings not to use the new Hollow Earth energy source without first testing it, Walter dismisses Ren's pleas and tells him to activate the mecha. At the same time, security apprehends Bernie, Madison, and Josh for penetrating Apex headquarters and transports them to Walter. Madison blames Walter of inciting Godzilla to war and caused all of this to begin with, yet he boldly responds that he took responsibility for allowing humans to fight back against Godzilla and the Titans.

Godzilla, despite having already become tired from his previous fight against Kong, and Mechagodzilla battle, at one point both firing their energy beams at one other which lock together, only for Mechagodzilla to get the upper hand and push Godzilla down and burn him. Nathan, Ilene, and Jia approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia notices that his heartbeat is slowing down. While Mechagodzilla proceeds to overrun and severely beat Godzilla, the others approach an unconscious Kong. In response, Ilene explains that they are unable to generate a charge large enough to restart Kong's heart. However, remembering what Maia said earlier about the HEAVs producing a charge large enough to power Las Vegas for a week, Nathan flies the remaining HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and unleashing a massive electrical charge that instantly revives Kong.

Heaps onto the robot and redirects the red energy beam, sparing Godzilla's life, as Mechagodzilla prepares to fire it into his throat. Knowing that Kong saved his life and recognizing that Godzilla is not an opponent, Godzilla aids Kong in his struggle against the mechanical demon Mechagodzilla.

Seeing Kong holding his axe, Godzilla supercharges it by blasting the weapon with his atomic breath, allowing Kong to dismember Mechagodzilla limb from limb and ripping its head off before holding up his trophy with a mighty roar of triumph and sitting down to rest.

When Madison reunites with Mark and introduces him to Josh and Bernie in the aftermath, Mark is overjoyed and asks him into his show to discuss the Monarch facility in Roswell. Godzilla appears and interrupts the moment, causing Kong to fetch his axe and prepare for a resumption of the battle. Instead of attacking, Godzilla just stands there and looks Kong in the eye. At last, the long-running animosity between Kong's race and Godzilla's is laid to rest as they both acknowledge their actual foe has been slain. Godzilla and Kong treat each other as equals before Godzilla returns to the ocean quietly as Kong and the rest of the assembled humanity watch.

Monster Analysis from Youtube

Godzilla vs. Kong has received favorable reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has 341 reviews, 254 of them fresh, and a "Tomatometer" score of 74 percent fresh as of April 16, 2021. The site's reviewers' consensus feature argues that "Delivering squarely on its title, Godzilla vs. Kong swats away character development and human drama to deliver all the spectacle you'd expect from giant monsters slugging it out."

On April 17, 2021, it was announced that Godzilla vs. Kong had eclipsed the overall box office receipts of the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters, despite the fact that box office receipts were still slightly reduced as a result of the epidemic.

It's Terry Rossio's first Godzilla picture since he wrote the script for the 1994 feature that was never created.

Kyle Chandler has appeared in two King Kong films, the first being Peter Jackson's 2005 version.

The fact that Chandler appeared in three different Godzilla films, including Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong, makes him unique in that he is the only individual who has been in a King Kong film, two Godzilla films and one crossover feature between the two.

The sequence in which Kong slams his dislocated right shoulder against a structure in order to reposition it may be a reference to Martin Riggs' famed ability of a similar sort in the Lethal Weapon series.

The film has several references to Neon Genesis Evangelion:

The location where Mechagodzilla is stationed, which is subterranean and topped by a pyramid, is reminiscent of the Central Dogma, which is also underground and topped by a pyramid.
